Can I Get a Medical Marijuana Card for Alzheimer's Disease in Arkansas?
Alzheimer's disease qualifies for an Arkansas MMJ card. For families navigating this disease, cannabis may offer some relief from specific symptoms — with some important caveats to know going in.
If you're reading this for a parent or loved one with Alzheimer's, you already know how hard this is. I want to be honest about what cannabis can realistically offer — and what it can't — so you can make a clear-eyed decision.
Alzheimer's disease qualifies in Arkansas
Alzheimer's disease is named as a qualifying condition under Arkansas's Medical Marijuana Amendment. A documented Alzheimer's diagnosis from a neurologist or primary care physician is the qualifying condition. Because Alzheimer's patients may have limited capacity to navigate the application process independently, the caregiver authorization option is especially important here.
What the research suggests — and an important caution
The research on cannabis for Alzheimer's disease is at an early stage. Most of what we know comes from preclinical studies (lab and animal research) rather than large human clinical trials. Early research has looked at cannabinoids' potential effects on neuroinflammation and amyloid plaques — the hallmarks of Alzheimer's — but this research does not yet translate into proven human benefits for disease progression.
Where cannabis may be more immediately relevant is symptom management. Agitation, anxiety, sleep disruption, and appetite changes are common in Alzheimer's patients and among the hardest for families and caregivers to manage. Some small studies and case reports suggest cannabis may help reduce agitation and improve sleep in dementia patients, but the evidence is limited.
An important caution specific to Alzheimer's: THC can cause confusion, disorientation, and memory disruption — symptoms that overlap with Alzheimer's itself and that may worsen in cognitively vulnerable patients. For most Alzheimer's patients, starting with CBD-dominant or low-THC products and proceeding very carefully with dosing is the most prudent approach. This is a situation where close communication with the patient's neurologist is essential.
Practical considerations for caregivers
Most Alzheimer's patients will need a designated caregiver to obtain and administer cannabis products on their behalf. Arkansas allows a designated caregiver to purchase medical marijuana at dispensaries for a registered patient. Setting up this authorization when the patient still has the legal capacity to consent is important — don't wait until the disease has progressed to a stage where consent becomes complicated.

Products — where to start for Alzheimer's patients
- CBD-dominant or high-CBD, low-THC products — best starting point for patients with cognitive vulnerability
- Tinctures for precise, adjustable dosing — easier to control than other formats
- Avoid high-THC products as a starting point — potential for worsening confusion
- Topicals for any pain or agitation with a physical component — no cognitive effect
We'd encourage caregivers to come in first, without the patient, for an initial consultation. We can walk you through options before any product is introduced.
